L. Kent Wogamott: A look back at art in 2006 -Top 10

Saturday, Dec 30, 2006 - 11:56:12 pm CST
Each year, I take a look back at the previous 12 months in the art world, choosing my top 10 encounters. Those can be exhibitions, interviews, books, events — anything that involves art.

Here’s the Top 10 for 2006:

10. “Hot Wax and Cool Artists: Encaustic Art Today,” Haydon Art Center — Encaustic painting is one of the world's oldest media, having been used to create images for 2,000 years or more by putting color in beeswax and applying that mixture to a surface. This summer, it came to Lincoln in contemporary form in this eight-artist show organized by Lincoln artist Margaret Berry, whose work was among the highlights of the exhibition.

Among other things, "Hot Wax and Cool Artists" demonstrated that encaustic painting can be used with any subject matter or artistic style and can come in multiple sizes, making it a medium that is simultaneously very old and smartly contemporary.
